The Appeal of the French Lifestyle
The French lifestyle has captured the hearts of many Americans, with over half expressing admiration for its unique approach to food, culture, and work-life balance. A recent poll of 2,000 adults highlighted the qualities that make the French way of life so appealing. Among these, a third of those surveyed praised the French preference for fresh ingredients over processed foods, as well as their deep appreciation for the arts and culture.
Work-life balance is another key factor in the American admiration for the French. Two-thirds of respondents believe that the French have a better balance between work and personal time than Americans. Additionally, a fifth of those surveyed commend the French dedication to ending work on time and protecting their lunch breaks. This emphasis on maintaining boundaries and prioritizing rest is seen as a vital component of overall wellbeing and productivity.
Many Americans are inspired by aspects of the French lifestyle and would like to incorporate them into their own lives. The most desired elements include enjoying fresh food, making time for hobbies and interests, and taking longer lunch breaks. Furthermore, 21 percent of those surveyed have adopted a more romantic attitude towards relationships, influenced by the French approach to love and connection.
What Makes the French Lifestyle Unique?
The French lifestyle is often described as a blend of sophistication and simplicity. It emphasizes quality over quantity, whether it’s in food, fashion, or daily routines. Many Americans admire how the French prioritize experiences—such as sipping a morning coffee at a sidewalk café, taking a leisurely stroll through a local market, or spending an afternoon with family around the table. These moments reflect a deeper cultural value of savoring life’s simple pleasures.
A spokesperson for the bakery brand St Pierre, which commissioned the study, noted that “the French lifestyle is often admired and romanticized worldwide and for good reason.” They added, “There’s something timeless and deeply alluring about the French way of life that continues to captivate Americans.”
To promote a greater appreciation for the French lifestyle, the team offered a taste of France to Venice Beach goers during their lunch, promoting the idea of “Eat Avec Respect.” This campaign highlights the importance of taking time to enjoy meals and treating them as meaningful occasions rather than rushed tasks.
Insights from the Study
The study also revealed some interesting perspectives from Americans regarding the French. While 29 percent of respondents believe it’s unlikely that the French admire aspects of the American way of life, they still take pride in showcasing American cuisine abroad. Items such as cheeseburgers, fried chicken, barbecue ribs, and apple pie are seen as symbols of American culinary identity.
Interestingly, a quarter of survey participants admitted that their understanding of the French way of life comes mainly from social media platforms like Instagram or TikTok. This suggests that digital content plays a significant role in shaping perceptions of foreign cultures.
The spokesperson emphasized that “many Americans admire how the French approach balance—not just in food and fashion, but in work and rest.” They added, “There’s a deep respect for boundaries when it comes to time off, and a national understanding that taking proper breaks isn’t laziness—it’s essential to wellbeing and productivity.”
