Sunny Days for Your Keiki with SUN Bucks

Sunny Days for Your Keiki with SUN Bucks

Understanding the SUN Bucks Program

The SUN Bucks program is designed to support families in Hawaii by ensuring that children have access to nutritious meals during the summer months. This initiative helps bridge the gap when school meals are not available, allowing kids to maintain a healthy diet throughout the season. Families are encouraged to apply for this program before the deadline, which is set for August 3.

What SUN Bucks Offers

Families who qualify for the SUN Bucks program will receive $177 in food benefits per eligible child. This assistance can be used to purchase groceries and other essential food items, promoting healthier eating habits among children. The program aims to ensure that every child has the nutrition they need to grow and thrive, regardless of the time of year.

Who Automatically Qualifies

Certain children may automatically qualify for SUN Bucks without needing to apply. These include:

  • Children from households that participated in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) or Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) between July 1, 2023, and August 4, 2024.
  • Foster children or those identified by their schools as homeless, migrant, or runaway.
  • Children attending a school that offers the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) and are approved for free or reduced-price meals.

It’s important to note that Head Start and pre-K students in NSLP-participating programs do not automatically qualify.

Who Needs to Apply

For other families, applying for SUN Bucks is necessary if:

  • Their children attend a school where all meals are free, but the family did not apply for or was not approved for free or reduced-price meals.
  • Their children attend a school operating the NSLP but were not approved for free or reduced-price meals during the school year and might now qualify based on household income.

Key Messages from Officials

Officials emphasize the importance of the SUN Bucks program in supporting families and the broader community. “We’re proud of the progress so far — but we also know many families still need support,” said Department of Homeland Security Director Yamane. “If your child was approved for free or reduced-price meals, or your family received SNAP or TANF, you’re already eligible and don’t need to apply. But if you’re not sure, don’t wait.”

Governor Josh Green highlighted the impact of the program, stating, “SUN Bucks is a reminder that when we invest in our keiki, we invest in the future of our state. These benefits don’t just help families — they strengthen our local economy by putting dollars directly into our grocery stores, farmers markets, and food systems.”

Community Values and Commitment

First Lady Jaime Kanani Green emphasized the community values that underpin the SUN Bucks program. “In Hawaii, we care for one another — we malama our keiki, our kupuna and our ohana,” she said. “SUN Bucks reflects those values. It’s about ensuring every child has what they need nutritionally to grow and thrive — not just during the school year, but all year long. No child in Hawaii should ever go hungry and this program helps us live up to that kuleana.”

How to Access Benefits

Once approved, the SUN Bucks card will be mailed to eligible households. This card can be used at any store that accepts EBT, making it convenient for families to access their benefits.

Important Notice Regarding Fraud

Hawaii DHS has issued a fraud alert regarding fraudulent calls. Families are advised to be cautious and verify any information received through unofficial channels. For more details, visit the official website or call 1-888-975-7328.

By taking advantage of the SUN Bucks program, families can ensure their children have the nutrition they need throughout the summer. With the deadline approaching, it’s crucial for eligible families to act promptly and secure their benefits.
