Summer Safety Secret: Why Sunscreen is a Must-Have

JOPLIN, Mo. — You don’t have to let sunburns stand in the way of having a fun-filled summertime.

Doctor Jay Reynolds says sunburns are superficial burns to the skin, causing redness, irritation, pain, and even blisters. Reynolds recommends wearing lightweight clothing like athletic wear and hats to prevent sunburns. But he says the best way to prevent sunburns is using sunscreen.

“Recommendations are at least minimum SPF 30 to 50, closer to the 50 sun on sunny days because there’s more of the harmful rays provided by the sun in those warmer months in comparison to the winter,” said Dr. Jay Reynolds, ER Resident Physician.

A final reminder from Dr. Reynolds, you can still get sunburns on a cloudy day.
