Subaru Unveils New EV with 290-Mile Range, Will Hyundai and Kia Be Concerned?

Introduction to the Subaru Uncharted EV

Subaru has unveiled its latest electric vehicle, the Uncharted, in a live presentation that is expected to challenge the electric models of its competitors, including the Hyundai Kona and Kia Niro. This compact SUV is making waves with its impressive performance metrics, offering up to 338 horsepower across the Sport and GT trims. This power translates into a 0-60 mph time of under five seconds and an estimated range of 290 miles.

The Uncharted’s performance is driven by dual electric motors located on both the front and rear axles, ensuring standard all-wheel drive (AWD) on two of the three available variants. The trim lineup includes Premium FWD, Sport, and GT. While the FWD trim offers over 300 miles of range, it delivers slightly less horsepower at 221. Fast-charging the 74.7-kWh lithium-ion battery from 0% to 80% takes approximately thirty minutes, and drivers can choose from various drive modes such as Snow, Mud, and Dirt for enhanced off-road capabilities.

Design and Features of the Uncharted

Despite being nearly seven inches shorter than Subaru’s Solterra electric SUV, the Uncharted offers additional storage space behind the second row, totaling 25 cubic feet. The vehicle accommodates up to five passengers and features design elements like orange accents and soft-touch materials within the cabin. The GT and Sport trims come with Subaru StarTex interior upholstery, while the GT also includes heated outboard rear seats.

On the technology front, the Uncharted boasts a 14-inch touchscreen, dual wireless smartphone chargers, and support for wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Rear dual USB-C chargers are also included, and a battery preconditioning system helps achieve the 30-minute charge time even in challenging conditions like cold weather. The digital gauge cluster is positioned above the dashboard, complemented by a sleek LED ambient lighting strip. A panoramic glass roof paired with two-tone coloring contributes to the Uncharted’s modern appearance. The GT trim features ventilated front seats and 20-inch wheels, while other wheel options measure 18 inches. AWD models include low-profile roof rails.

Comparison with Competitors

When compared to the Hyundai Kona Electric and Kia Niro EV, the Subaru Uncharted outperforms both in terms of power and range. The 2026 Hyundai Kona Electric offers between 133 and 215 horsepower, while the Kia Niro EV provides 201 horsepower. The Kona Electric can take drivers between 200 and 260 miles on a single charge, whereas the Niro EV offers a 253-mile range. The Uncharted is also more focused on off-road capabilities and provides more cargo space behind the second row than the Niro, falling short of the Kona Electric by just 0.5 cubic feet.

Final Thoughts on the Uncharted

The 2026 Subaru Uncharted is set to offer strong competition to the Hyundai Kona Electric and Kia Niro EV with its sharp exterior design, impressive range, off-road capabilities, and a tech-rich interior. During the global in-person reveal of the Uncharted in New York, several standout features were noted, including rear door handles on the C-pillar, a distinctive headlight design, and an interior that feels clean and straightforward yet not dull. The 2026 Subaru Uncharted is expected to hit the market in early 2026, with pricing details to be announced closer to its release.
