Storm Chances Persist Daily Across Parts of New Mexico This Week

This week will see persistent active weather with daily possibilities of rain and thunderstorms throughout portions of New Mexico. There is also potential for strong to severe storms, particularly in the eastern regions of the state.

On Monday afternoon, more rainfall and thunderstorms emerged in northern and eastern New Mexico. Among them were some severe storms characterized by torrential downpours, substantial accumulations of hail, and frequent flashes of lightning. The area under threat includes eastern New Mexico tonight, where a Severe Thunderstorm Watch remains active until 11 PM. By Tuesday morning, calmer conditions should prevail as moisture shifts back towards the western direction into the Rio Grande Valley during the night.

Throughout this week, moisture will oscillate between eastern and central New Mexico. By the afternoon, westerly winds will drive the moisture towards the eastern regions of the state. This pattern will maintain the highest likelihood of rainfall and thunderstorms over eastern New Mexico as well as most mountainous areas. On Wednesday, eastern New Mexico faces another day with potential for robust to extreme storms. Large hail and powerful wind gusts pose the primary risks; however, an occasional tornado cannot be discounted.

Scattered storms will persist through the remainder of this week as temperatures rise. Exceptionally warm conditions will prevail over the upcoming weekend, causing the temperature around Albuquerque Metropolitan Area to soar into the 90-degree range. There’s a good chance that thunderstorm activity could ramp up once more starting from Sunday going into early next week.
