Stage Set for Global Gem and Jewelry Expo in Ratnapura

Sri Lanka, August 13 — The nation’s gem and jewelry sector has experienced a significant decline over the last two years, according to Deputy Minister of Industry and Entrepreneurship Development Chathuranga Abeysinghe. The official made this remark while taking part in a joint press conference organized by the National Gem and Jewellery Authority, which recently unveiled the “Gem City International Gem and Jewellery Exhibition 2025.” This event will take place in Ratnapura from August 15 to 17, 2025.

The “Gem City International Gem and Jewellery Exhibition 2025” is set to take place as a collaborative initiative involving various industry players, such as the National Gem and Jewellery Authority, the Ministry of Industry and Entrepreneurship Development, the Sri Lanka Gem Traders and Miners Association, and the Sri Lanka Gem and Jewellery Association. The event seeks to support the goal of achieving $1 billion in export earnings from Sri Lanka’s gem and jewellery sector and to enhance the global standing of Ratnapura, recognized as a key center for gem trading. With more than 100 booths, the exhibition will serve as a venue for showcasing gem and jewellery design and innovation alongside traditional gem trading activities. It will also offer small and medium-sized gem manufacturers and traders the chance to engage with international buyers through the “Gem City International Gem and Jewellery Exhibition 2025.”

Several international delegates from the gem and jewelry sector, hailing from nations including China, India, Vietnam, Germany, and Thailand, are also set to attend this year’s exhibition. The Deputy Minister stated, “as a nation possessing a distinct gem and jewelry industry, Sri Lanka is establishing the essential groundwork for the development of this sector.” (MFJ)
