St. Louis SC Boots Head Coach After Just 15 Games

ST. LOUIS – The St. Louis SC organization has reported that they have dismissed their head coach, Olof Mellberg, effective immediately.

The club made the
announcement
On social platforms right around 7 p.m., Mellberg steered the squad for merely 15 matches, and he was brought aboard last November.

In the 2025-2026 season, St. Louis City SC has secured victories in just two matches and currently ranks 14th in the Western Conference.

The choice to separate from Olof extends further than merely the outcomes,” explained CITY SC Sporting Director Lutz Pfannenstiel. “We’ve evaluated various aspects of the team’s performance, considering the necessity to adopt the strategic approach that initially brought us success over these past four years. Maintaining our established standards as an organization compelled us to conclude that altering our coaching direction would be crucial for enhancing our collective game and reinstating a victorious mindset.

Following Mellberg’s dismissal, the squad stated that David Critchley will take over as the team’s manager temporarily until a new head coach is appointed.

Critchley served as the head coach of St. Louis CITY2, where the squad has secured six victories and suffered four losses out of eleven fixtures this campaign. According to a statement released by St. Louis SC, Critchley is well-known to the team.

“Critchley has collaborated extensively with several players who began their careers with CITY2. With his background in coaching at both the academy and CITY2 levels, he showcases his dedication to the playing style cherished by CITY’s supporters. This makes him well-suited to immediately contribute to the first team,” the club stated.

One of Critchley’s assistants, Baggio Hušidić, will be part of the first team’s coaching staff as well. For CITY2, John Hackworth has been appointed as the interim head coach.

The upcoming match for St. Louis City will be held on Saturday, May 31st, versus the San Jose Earthquakes at Energizer Park.
