A Celebrated Figure in Ghanaian Music and Leadership
Ghanaian music icon and cultural ambassador Sparqlyn, known in private life as Ahmmed Kanneh Larweh, has officially won the prestigious African Best Ghanaian Musician of the Year 2025 title at the African Performance Leadership Awards (APLA). This recognition highlights his remarkable contributions to both the music industry and social development across Ghana and the broader African continent.
The 2025 APLA ceremony was organized by the African Performance Leadership Academy in collaboration with EYE TV Africa. The event took place at Olumo Hall, located at the Airport Hotel in Ikeja, Lagos, Nigeria. It brought together a diverse group of leaders, artists, and influencers from across the continent to celebrate excellence and leadership in various fields.
Sparqlyn’s journey in the music industry spans over two decades. He first gained prominence as a founding member of the Hiplife group Dunsin before launching a successful solo career in 2018. His hit singles such as “Jump On Me,” “Your Body,” and “Tumpa” have not only earned him international acclaim but also a growing global fan base. These tracks showcase his versatility and ability to connect with audiences through powerful lyrics and captivating rhythms.
Beyond his musical achievements, Sparqlyn is equally recognized for his work as a traditional leader. He serves as the Development Chief in the Manya Krobo Traditional Area, under the stool name Nene Kanneh Larweh I, Noryam Matse. In this role, he has initiated scholarship schemes for underprivileged youth, promoted unity among the Ga-Adangbe people, and collaborated with senior traditional leaders on various developmental projects. His efforts reflect a deep commitment to community upliftment and cultural preservation.
In March 2025, Sparqlyn’s dual impact in music and community leadership was acknowledged by the Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA), which honored him with two awards and a citation during the Akwaaba Festival. This recognition, combined with his win at APLA 2025, further solidifies his legacy as one of Ghana’s most influential modern-day figures.
The 2025 APLA event also celebrated other distinguished Ghanaians who have made significant contributions in their respective fields. Among them were President John Dramani Mahama, the Asantehene Otumfuo Nana Osei Tutu II, celebrated actress Juliet Ibrahim, Amb. Dr. Sam Owusu, and the Agricultural Development Bank Ghana. Each recipient was honored for their exemplary leadership and dedication to progress.
The award ceremony was chaired by Ambassador Dr. King Nkosinathi Eugene Mahlangu, Bongwe II of the Ndebele Kingdom in South Africa. The event featured keynote speeches from prominent continental voices such as Dr. Shuaibu Danwakan and Ambassador Dr. Joseph Anthony Carew. These speakers addressed pressing African issues, including climate change resilience, terrorism, and governance, emphasizing the need for collective action and sustainable development.
Sparqlyn’s recognition at APLA 2025 is a testament to his enduring influence and contributions to both the arts and society. His story serves as an inspiration to aspiring musicians and community leaders alike, demonstrating that success can be achieved through talent, dedication, and a commitment to making a positive impact.
