Sowore Protests at NYSC HQ for Raye’s Unreleased Certificate

A human rights advocate and ex-presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has gone to the National Youth Service Corps office in Abuja to request the release document of female corps member, Ushie Rita Uguamaye, widely referred to as “Raye.”

On Tuesday morning, Sowore was taken to the headquarters by several activists, among them human rights lawyer Inibehe Effiong, who also acts as Raye’s attorney.

In a message posted on his X account on Monday, Sowore mentioned that the action was taken to ensure she obtains her release certificate.

Sowore promised to deliver justice for Raye, emphasizing that the unfair treatment she endured would not be permitted to remain unchallenged.

“By 9am tomorrow, we will gather at the Maitama Abuja Headquarters of the National Youth Service Corps @officialnyscng to collect the Discharge Certificate for Corp Member Ushie Rita Uguamaye ‘Raye’, who has completed her required service,” he stated.

Remember that Raye claimed the NYSC held back her release certificate following her criticism of the Bola Tinubu administration.

Nevertheless, the NYSC mentioned that her certificate was held back because she did not participate in the required April 2025 biometric verification and not due to any strong statements she made regarding the federal government.

In a statement released on Sunday, the NYSC administration labeled as “completely baseless and untrue” the allegations spreading on social media that the certificate was denied because of her criticism towards the government.

The NYSC mentioned that Rita is one of 131 corps members who had their certificates withheld due to legitimate disciplinary issues.

As per the NYSC, her service period has been specifically prolonged by two months due to her failure to participate in the April 2025 biometric verification — a move that the organization claims is in line with the NYSC Bye-Laws.

“Rita is one of the 131 Corps Members whose Certificates of National Service were held back due to legitimate disciplinary issues. Specifically, Rita’s service period has been extended by two months because she did not attend the April 2025 biometrics clearance, a decision that complies with the NYSC Bye-Laws,” it stated.

“It should be emphasized that this extension is a routine process and not specific to her situation, and the concept of equal treatment was merely implemented in this instance,” it further stated.
