Partnership Between SOWELA and Columbia Southern University Enhances Criminal Justice Education
SOWELA Technical Community College and Columbia Southern University (CSU) have entered into a significant agreement that will streamline the path for students pursuing degrees in criminal justice. This collaboration marks the first articulation agreement between the two institutions, creating a more seamless transition for students who complete an Associate of Applied Science in Criminal Justice at SOWELA and then transfer to CSU for their bachelor’s degree.
Under this agreement, students who finish their associate degree at SOWELA will be able to transfer their credits directly to CSU. These credits will count toward both general education requirements and specific criminal justice coursework needed for a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice Administration from the College of Safety and Emergency Services. As a result, students transferring to CSU will need as few as 60 additional credit hours to complete their bachelor’s degree, significantly reducing the time and cost required to earn a four-year degree.
This partnership is particularly beneficial for individuals who are already working in the field, such as law enforcement professionals. The agreement allows for greater flexibility and accessibility, making it easier for those with busy schedules to continue their education without having to start from scratch.
Expanding Access to Criminal Justice Education
In addition to the new articulation agreement, SOWELA has recently received approval to offer its Criminal Justice degree online. This development expands access to education for working adults, including those who may not be able to attend traditional on-campus classes due to professional or personal commitments. The online program complements the existing on-campus offerings, providing students with a more flexible learning experience.
For individuals who are already certified through the Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) program, SOWELA offers credit for three specific criminal justice courses. This recognition of prior training helps reduce the number of courses students must take, further supporting their educational and career goals.
Opportunities for the Fall 2025 Semester
SOWELA is currently accepting applications for all programs, including the Criminal Justice degree, for the upcoming Fall 2025 semester. Prospective students interested in taking advantage of this new opportunity can visit the official website to learn more about the program and apply.
The college also provides various financial support options, including scholarships and financial aid, for students who qualify. These resources help ensure that education remains accessible to a wide range of individuals, regardless of their financial situation.
Benefits of the Articulation Agreement
The agreement between SOWELA and CSU offers several key benefits:
- Smooth Transition: Students can move from an associate degree to a bachelor’s degree with minimal disruption.
- Credit Transfer: Credits earned at SOWELA can be applied toward a bachelor’s degree at CSU.
- Reduced Coursework: Students will need only 60 additional credit hours to complete their bachelor’s degree.
- Flexibility: Online and on-campus options provide students with multiple ways to pursue their education.
- Career Advancement: The program supports individuals looking to advance their careers in law enforcement and related fields.
This collaboration represents a major step forward in expanding educational opportunities for students in the criminal justice field. By working together, SOWELA and CSU are helping to build a stronger, more educated workforce that meets the needs of the community and the industry.
