Pakistan, June 29 — ROME – A powerful heatwave has gripped Southern Europe, pushing temperatures above 40degC (104degF) in Italy, Greece, Spain, and Portugal. Authorities have issued high alerts, warning of extreme heat and rising wildfire threats.
In Portugal, two-thirds of the country is under red alert, with temperatures expected to soar past 42degC in Lisbon. Similarly, in Greece, officials remain on high wildfire alert after a blaze south of Athens forced evacuations near the ancient Temple of Poseidon.
Meanwhile in Italy, regions like Lazio, Tuscany, and Puglia are preparing to ban outdoor labor during peak heat hours. The Italian Health Ministry has placed 21 of 27 cities, including Rome, Milan, and Naples, under the highest heat alert level due to record temperatures.
Tourists in Rome sought shade near landmarks like the Colosseum and Trevi Fountain, while vendors in Milan and Naples sold lemonade to help people stay cool. Authorities urged residents to avoid physical activity during the hottest hours and to stay hydrated.
Spain is also battling extreme heat, with temperatures reaching 42degC in Seville and other southern cities. The national weather service expects June to become the hottest since recordkeeping began, triggering health alerts and safety guidance for the public.
Experts warn that such extreme weather is a direct result of climate change. A Lancet study projects that without urgent climate action, heat-related deaths in Europe could quadruple by mid-century, especially impacting the elderly and children.
