Thailand, the second largest economy in Southeast Asia, saw a 2.7% drop in foreign arrivals during the first five months of this year to 14.3 million, with a sharp decline of visitors from China.
Chinese nationals remained the largest group of visitors, with 1.95 million arrivals but this figure represented a 32.71% decline compared to the same period last year.
Malaysia came in second with 1.9 million, followed by India (978,000), Russia (961,000) and South Korea (673,000).
Thailand’s tourist number reported a particularly sharp drop in May, with foreign arrivals plunging by 13.93% compared to the same month last year.
Safety concerns have weighed on the minds of Chinese travelers following the high-profile kidnapping of
Chinese actor Xing Xing
in Thailand in January.
The Bank of Thailand expects the number of Chinese visitors to the country to fall to five million this year, 25% less than in 2024.
The central bank said the projection for total foreign arrivals has also been revised down from 39.5 million to 37.5 million.
