Souris Valley Animal Shelter Hosts 5K Color Run and Lend-A-Paw Festival Next Month

A Celebration of Mental Health and Animal Companionship

The Souris Valley Animal Shelter in Minot, North Dakota, is taking a unique approach to promoting mental health awareness by highlighting the profound impact that animals have on people’s emotional and physical well-being. This effort comes in the form of a community event that combines fun, education, and celebration, drawing attention to the role of pets, service dogs, and emotional support animals in improving quality of life.

On August 9, the shelter will host its annual 5K Color Run/Walk/Roll alongside the Lend-A-Paw Festival. This event is designed to bring together residents of all ages for a day filled with activities that celebrate the bond between humans and animals. The goal is not only to raise awareness about mental health but also to recognize how pets contribute to emotional stability, reduce stress, and enhance overall happiness.

The festival promises a wide range of attractions for attendees. Families can enjoy pet-friendly activities, including opportunities to meet and interact with various animals. Food vendors will be on hand to provide a variety of options, while bounce houses and other entertainment options will keep children engaged. For those looking for a bit of adventure, axe throwing and other interactive games will be available. These activities ensure that there is something for everyone, making the event accessible and enjoyable for all participants.

Haley Burchett, a representative from the animal shelter, emphasized the significance of the event. She shared her vision for the future of the festival, stating, “These animals are changing lives, and I just feel like someday, even if it’s not this year, I want this to be as big as the Food Truck Festival.” Burchett expressed hope that the event will become a staple in the community, where people can bring their beloved pets and connect with others who share a deep appreciation for animal companionship.

In addition to the main event, the Minot Police Department will also participate by bringing their bomb squad and therapy K9s. These teams will have the opportunity to share their stories and demonstrate how working dogs play a critical role in both public safety and emotional support. Their presence at the festival will add an educational component, allowing attendees to learn more about the important work these animals do.

The Lend-A-Paw Festival is more than just a day of fun—it’s a meaningful initiative that underscores the importance of mental health and the therapeutic benefits of animal interaction. By creating a space where people can come together, share experiences, and celebrate the positive impact of animals, the Souris Valley Animal Shelter is fostering a stronger, more compassionate community.

As the event approaches, local residents are encouraged to participate and support a cause that promotes both human and animal well-being. Whether through joining the 5K run, exploring the festival grounds, or simply enjoying the company of animals, everyone has a role to play in celebrating the power of connection and care.
