A New Culinary Challenge
Two social media chefs have taken on a unique challenge by creating the world’s largest scotch egg, which weighs an impressive 7.8kg. This massive creation is heavier than a standard bowling ball and has surpassed the previous record of 6.2kg. The project was undertaken by Oli Paterson, 28, and Phoenix Ross, 27, who spent 24 hours crafting this meaty masterpiece.
The duo used an ostrich egg and over seven kilos of sausage meat to build their super-sized delicacy. However, their first attempt didn’t go as planned when the scotch egg fell apart in the fryer. After refining their technique, including freezing the structure overnight, they were finally successful.
Oli, a social media chef based in Enfield, London, mentioned that he had previously made a five-kilogram scotch egg and felt confident about the process. He explained that they had a failed attempt a week before the successful one, where the scotch egg disintegrated when it entered the fryer. By adding some key preparation steps, such as setting it in the freezer overnight, they managed to achieve their goal.
The Inspiration Behind the Record
The idea for the giant scotch egg came about when Phoenix was approached by Guinness World Records after they saw his social media series, “But Bigger.” This series features giant versions of normal food, and Phoenix brought Oli into the project. Together, they brainstormed on what they could create on a grand scale.
They considered various options, such as a burrito, a beef wellington, or a sausage roll, but those records had already been set quite high. Oli noted that it took them some time to think of something that hadn’t already been done extensively. He mentioned that attempting to beat the Beef Wellington record would have required a lot of specialist equipment. When they thought of a scotch egg, it seemed like the perfect choice, especially since Oli had already created a 5kg version and the existing record was only 6.2 kilograms.
Preparing for the Big Day
To bring their vision to life, the pair ordered everything they needed, which included five ostrich eggs, a total of 22 kilograms of sausage meat, and a 40-liter fryer. The total cost for the ingredients and equipment came to £505. Oli shared that the new fryer cost around £150, but the eggs and meat significantly increased the price. The five ostrich eggs, sourced from a farm in Scotland, cost about £35 each. Due to their initial failure, they had to purchase more sausage meat, which added up to £180.
Despite the challenges, Oli believes the effort was worth it. “It always feels worth it to try something new and exciting,” he said.
Enjoying the Results
Oli and Phoenix both tried the egg and enjoyed it, although they noted that ostrich egg isn’t as tasty as a chicken egg. According to Guinness World Records’ rules, the food must be eaten, so the pair are steadily working through the scotch egg. They have also transformed the rest of it into breakfast burritos, which currently sit in Oli’s freezer.
Oli shared that they’re slowly making their way through the scotch egg. While it was satisfying to try, he knew that the taste wouldn’t be the same as a traditional scotch egg. Nevertheless, he expressed excitement about achieving a Guinness World Record. “It was definitely a fun endeavor,” he said. “I’m excited to have a Guinness World Record!”
