State transportation authorities mentioned that traffic will take an alternate route via Highway 544, with signs already set up to inform drivers about the temporary road closure.
Throughout the years, the Myrtle Beach region has hosted film productions, including “Magic Mike XXL” in 2014, “Shag” from 1989, “Don’t Make Waves” in 1967, and several minor television series.
In comparison to Wilmington, Southport, and Charleston, which have been the primary locations for “Outer Banks” and other popular films such as “The Notebook,” “The Patriot,” and “Dear John,” Myrtle Beach has issued a significantly lower number of filming permits.

South Carolina’s Film Commissioner, Matt Storm, mentioned that film crews consider more than just the visual appeal when selecting filming locations. He noted that areas such as Charleston and Wilmington have well-established teams of crew members, while Myrtle Beach’s tourism might have a detrimental effect, particularly during the summer season.
Usually, the main challenge is the crew base. The more tourist-friendly an area is, the less likely it will be chosen as a filming location, since it will be much harder to manage that space,” he said. “For ‘Outer Banks,’ which films in Charleston, they aren’t shooting at the battery. They’re choosing areas that are easier to control, just like there would never be a movie filmed in the middle of summer at a place like Barefoot Landing.
Storm mentioned that it’s primarily about practicality. Factors such as distance, expenses for accommodation in the location, and the offers provided by the region to the production can all influence the choice.
Enhancing the appeal of Myrtle Beach, Storm added, revolves around increasing the visibility of Myrtle Beach.
Greenville is beginning to do this,” he said. “They want to manage their own film page so they can connect with our website, allowing us to say, ‘Hey, producers, check this out.’ Then there’s a range of locations available in Greenville that can give people who aren’t familiar with the area an idea of what it looks like, such as examples of gas stations or any other spots we could film at.
The bridge is set to reopen on July 30.
