Simpson University Boosts Nursing Program to Tackle Local Shortage

In response to concerns about a potential nursing shortage in Shasta County, Simpson University is taking significant steps to bolster its nursing education offerings.

The university’s School of Nursing has announced an expansion of its Bachelor of Science in Nursing program, increasing the number of students in each cohort from 27 to 45. This change will raise the program’s total capacity from 135 to 225 students.

The expansion is supported by a $500,000 grant from the Fletcher Jones Foundation, which will fund the addition of new manikins for the simulation laboratory, known as the Sim Lab, and enable the hiring of more staff to accommodate the increased student body.

Looking ahead, Simpson University plans to introduce a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) program in the following year. This program will provide simulated clinical training opportunities to local hospital residency programs, further enhancing the region’s healthcare education infrastructure.
