A rain-invoking ceremony took place on August 2 at Tamanoike Shrine in Sakata city, Yamagata Prefecture, where rice farming is flourishing. This marked the first time such an event has occurred in 82 years. It is said that locals requested the ceremony because “it’s a concern if there’s no water in the rice fields during the critical period when the rice ears develop.” In July, Sakata recorded just 3 millimeters of rainfall, the second-lowest amount since records started in 1937.

Simple Japanese news is sourced from the Mainichi Shogakusei Shimbun, a children’s newspaper. This is ideal content for those learning Japanese who have mastered hiragana and katakana. We recommend beginners to read the article in English first and then in Japanese, or the other way around, to assess their understanding.
