GREENVILLE, N.C. (WITN) – Teachers from Eastern North Carolina visited ECU Health for a Teacher Institute organized by STEM East.
The event aimed to help educators learn about healthcare and share that knowledge with their students.
During the tour, a simulation of a pediatric shark bite victim gave them a look into what hospital workers might encounter.
Organizers hope the teachers learn new things and are able to go back into their classrooms with new information they can share with their students.
“We are not just showcasing health sciences careers that high school students would be interested in.” ECU Health Program Coordinator Nancy Turner. “We talk about our values and things that we can instill into students as early a kindergarten, making sure that they know how to greet people and have confidence, empathy, and compassion. Those are the things we need here at the hospital and health care.”
During the tour, teachers were able to see what part each department plays in saving a person’s life.
Some of the areas of the tour include the children’s emergency department, child life, and the blood bank.
