A New Musical Takes Shape in the Bay Area
When asked about my favorite show, I always say “Come From Away,” with the caveat that there are many great contenders. This 2013 musical by Irene Sankoff and David Hein tells the story of a small Canadian town that opened its arms to thousands of stranded airline passengers on 9/11. It’s a powerful reminder of the better angels of our nature and an experience that can truly be life-changing.
Now, Bay Area audiences have a unique opportunity to witness the creative process of another exciting project by the same duo. The new musical “Vienna” explores the lives of four characters in the Austrian capital at different points in time. While still in development, this production is just one of the many highlights of TheatreWorks Silicon Valley’s annual New Works Festival.

Exploring New Works
The New Works Festival is a platform for emerging and established artists to showcase their latest creations. This year’s lineup includes a variety of compelling works that promise to engage and inspire. One of the most anticipated productions is “The Bridge,” a musical by the performing duo the Kilbanes, known for their previous work “Weightless.” This new piece delves into the story of an 1867 marriage where the gender roles are swapped, offering a fresh perspective on traditional narratives.
Another standout is “The Employee Dharma Handbook” by Geetha Reddy. This play follows an overlooked promotion that uncovers centuries of social friction within an aerospace company. With its blend of humor and insight, it promises to spark meaningful conversations about workplace dynamics and societal norms.
