A Return to the Great British Sewing Bee
The Great British Sewing Bee made a triumphant return last night, with host Sara Pascoe stepping back into her role after taking time off for maternity leave. Her appearance was as memorable as ever, and she looked absolutely stunning in a quirky, trippy cloud outfit that perfectly captured the whimsical spirit of the show.

For me, the launch episode was nothing short of spectacular. It felt like the best opening episode of any Sewing Bee series yet, with the level of talent on display being more exciting than ever before. However, I couldn’t help but miss Kiell Smith-Bynoe, who had become a standout presence during the previous season.
Sara had to step away from the show to focus on her new baby, and Kiell, a fellow comedian and actor from the sitcom Ghosts, took over. What started as an unexpected choice quickly became one of the most beloved additions to the show. His lack of presenting experience gave him a refreshing, down-to-earth energy that made him feel like a friend popping by for a chat rather than a formal host.
Kiell’s genuine interest in the contestants and his appreciation for their work created a warm and welcoming atmosphere. He didn’t pretend to know everything about sewing, which only added to his charm. Despite not being a household name at the time, he quickly proved to be the perfect fit for the show. His presence brought a sense of excitement and anticipation that made every episode a must-watch.

Even though he wasn’t widely known before joining the show, Kiell’s comedic talents were evident. He had previously appeared in shows like Death in Paradise, Stath Lets Flats, and Ghosts, and had also gained popularity on Channel 4’s Taskmaster. However, it wasn’t until he joined the Sewing Bee that he truly found his place in the spotlight.
One of the highlights of his hosting was his ability to address the elephant in the room with humor. In his first episode, he joked about the judges watching Ghosts on iPlayer, highlighting the unusual nature of his casting. But instead of causing controversy, his self-deprecating humor won over both the audience and the judges, including Patrick Grant, who saw the potential in his unique approach.
On social media, the response to Kiell was overwhelmingly positive. There were very few negative comments, and it seemed clear that he had found a home among the fans of the show. His ability to blend comedy with the serious nature of the competition made him a valuable addition to the team.
While I have immense respect for Sara Pascoe and her natural charisma, I believe there was a missed opportunity to keep Kiell on board. The dynamic between the two hosts could have been a dream combination, offering a fresh perspective that would have elevated the show even further.
The Great British Sewing Bee has always been a favorite for its inclusive and innovative approach. It brings together people from all walks of life to create beautiful designs, and the warmth and kindness displayed by the contestants are rare to find elsewhere. With the right hosting duo, the show could easily break through to a wider audience.
As the series continues, there are plenty of reasons to be excited. From the creative challenges to the talented contestants, each episode offers something new and engaging. While I still wish Kiell was part of the team, there’s no denying that Sara Pascoe is a fantastic host in her own right.
The Great British Sewing Bee airs Wednesdays at 9pm on BBC One and is available to stream on BBC iPlayer now. Whether you’re a long-time fan or just discovering the show, there’s something for everyone. Don’t miss out on the magic of this beloved television series.
