August 4 is more than just a date on the calendar,” stated Superintendent Dr. Denise Watts. “It represents a new start to the school year, a fresh opportunity, and our renewed dedication to supporting all of our students.

That dedication begins even before the school day starts. Superintendent Watts stated that the district has hired additional bus drivers, enabling them to transport 27,000 students each day.

After arriving at school, students will observe a greater police presence, according to SCCPSS Police Chief Terry Enoch.

“This is effective and allows us the chance to take action beforehand and avoid issues,” stated Enoch.

The police department in the district also launched three new K-9 teams and emphasized the commitment of its 68 officers who safeguard students.

On the financial side, SCCPSS provided information regarding federal funding. The Trump administration had previously held back $11 million in Title funds, but district officials stated that the majority of the money has now been made available.

Nevertheless, they are still awaiting over a million dollars for English as a Second Language and professional development initiatives.

“The remaining amount is slightly more than $1.5 million, and we plan to address it locally,” said Chief Financial Officer Larry Jackson.

Nevertheless, Superintendent Watts showed assurance in the district’s preparedness for the upcoming school year.

“Our school staff and educators are ready to greet every student, ensuring they have a school year where they succeed,” Watts stated.

Students in Savannah-Chatham County will resume classes on Monday, August 4. Those who wish to participate can join a school bus ride-along on August 1. Parents should reach out to their child’s school for additional information.
