The Life and Passing of the ‘Sleeping Prince’
Prince Al-Waleed bin Khaled bin Talal Al Saud, often referred to as the ‘Sleeping Prince,’ has passed away at the age of 36. His life story captured the attention of many due to the tragic circumstances that led to his long-term coma. At just 15 years old, he suffered a severe brain hemorrhage after being involved in a car accident in London. This incident marked the beginning of a challenging journey that would span over two decades.
The news of his death was shared through a heartfelt message on X by his father, Prince Khaled bin Talal bin Abudalaziz. He expressed deep sorrow and faith in Allah’s decree, stating, “With hearts full of faith in Allah’s decree and destiny, and with profound sadness and sorrow, we mourn our beloved son Prince Al-Waleed bin Khaled bin Talal bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, may Allah have mercy on him, who passed away to Allah’s mercy today.”
Following the accident in 2005 while he was studying at a military school, Prince Al-Waleed was transferred to the King Abdulaziz Medical City in Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia. Despite the efforts of numerous specialists, he remained on a ventilator and never regained consciousness. His father played an active role in his treatment, showing unwavering determination to keep his son alive. In 2015, he even defied doctors’ advice to withdraw life support, choosing to fight for his son’s life.
There were moments of hope when the prince was observed making minor movements, such as raising his fingers and tilting his head. However, these brief signs did not lead to any significant improvement in his condition. Prince Al-Waleed is a great-grandson of King Abdulaziz, also known as Ibn Saud, the founder and first monarch of Saudi Arabia. He is also the nephew of billionaire Al Waheed bin Talal Al Saud and the current monarch, King Salman, is his great uncle.
The funeral prayers for Prince Al-Waleed will take place on Sunday afternoon at the Imam Turki bin Abdullah Mosque for men, while the women’s service will be held at King Faisal Specialist Hospital. From Sunday to Tuesday, men and women will have the opportunity to pay their respects at the Al-Fakhariya Palace.
