Santa Cruz’s Luke Rockhold to Headline Boxing Match in Manchester

Luke Rockhold Set for Boxing Debut in Misfits Boxing 22

Santa Cruz native Luke Rockhold, a former Strikeforce and UFC middleweight champion, is preparing for his boxing debut against MMA fighter Darren Till in Misfits Boxing 22. The event will take place on August 30 in Manchester, England, and the bridgerweight match (200 to 224 pounds) between Till, 32, and Rockhold, 40, will serve as a co-main event. The fight will be broadcast live on DAZN.

Rockhold, who graduated from Soquel High and was released from the UFC in 2022, has competed outside the promotion twice. In 2023, he suffered a second-round TKO loss to Mike Perry in his bare-knuckle boxing debut. However, he bounced back in April 2024 with a knockout victory over Joe Schilling in a Karate Combat match.

In addition to Rockhold’s bout, former UFC interim lightweight champion Tony Ferguson will make his professional boxing debut against Nathaniel “Salt Papi” Bustamante. This match will also serve as a co-main event in the middleweight division.

Gromshells Achieve Three-Peat in Roller Derby

The Santa Cruz Derby Groms’ Gromshells made history by securing their third consecutive title as Junior Roller Derby Association national champions. The victory took place at The Ranch Events Complex in Loveland, Colorado, on July 13.

In the semifinals, the Gromshells defeated Seattle Derby Brats’ Galaxy with a score of 222-50. They then triumphed over Rose City Rollers’ Rosebuds National All-Stars in the Female Division final with a score of 124-57. The Gromshells finished the season with an impressive 20-0 record.

During the qualifying rounds, they dominated the Foxtails Junior Derby from Fontana with a score of 488-3 and beat Seattle Derby Brats 265-27 in the final on June 22.

Capitola’s Jack Doherty Places Fourth in Mountain Bike Championships

Capitola’s Jack Doherty, who competes for Specialized Flow Formulas, placed fourth in the Amateur Men 19-29 division at the 2025 Endurance Mountain Bike National Championships in Roanoke, Virginia.

Benjamin Boroff of Marian University won the nine-lap race with a time of 18:41. Doherty finished just five seconds behind, showcasing his strong performance in the event.

Corvallis Knights’ Brock Ketelsen Named Top Prospect

Corvallis Knights outfielder Brock Ketelsen, a Scotts Valley resident and incoming freshman at Stanford University, was named the top prospect for the South team in the West Coast League All-Star Game. The South team lost 5-3 to the North in the game held in Bellingham, Washington.

Ketelsen, a recent graduate of Valley Christian High in San Jose, went 1-for-2 at the plate with a stolen base during the game. His performance highlighted his potential as a future standout in baseball.

Capitola-Soquel Falls in Little League Section 5 Tournament

Capitola-Soquel, the District 39 champion, fell to D-59 champion Santa Teresa in the Section 5 Tournament championship at Pajaro Valley Little League on Tuesday. The final score was 4-1 in favor of Santa Teresa.

Santa Teresa advanced to the NorCal Tournament, where they will compete against other regional champions.
