Russian Forces Face Setbacks in the Sumy Region
Russian forces in the Sumy region are experiencing significant challenges, with reports indicating that they are being forced to abandon previously held positions. This information was shared by military expert Ivan Stupak during a comment on the RBC-Ukraine YouTube channel. According to Stupak, details about the situation come from Ukrainian military personnel and military bloggers, who have observed the retreat of Russian troops from certain front-line areas.

Stupak explained that the extent of the Russian withdrawal remains uncertain. He noted that Russian soldiers are not sure how far they will have to retreat, with estimates ranging from several hundred meters to the state border with Russia. “They don’t even know whether it’ll be 500 meters deep, 2 kilometers, or all the way back to the administrative border,” he said. This uncertainty highlights the growing difficulties faced by Russian forces in maintaining their foothold in the region.
The expert also pointed out that Russian soldiers themselves are acknowledging the futility of their losses. “They’re saying they’re suffering senseless, useless losses. They question the point of losing hundreds of soldiers over a few village homes,” Stupak added. This sentiment suggests a growing disillusionment among some Russian troops, which could impact morale and operational effectiveness.
Potential for Escalation in the North
While the current situation in the Sumy region is tense, the expert does not rule out the possibility of further escalation in the northern direction. However, he emphasized that any significant movement would depend on decisions made by Russia’s military leadership. “If they make a decision, they can quickly redeploy forces,” Stupak stated.

He also addressed the presence of Kadyrov’s fighters in Taganrog, noting that while this may raise concerns, it does not necessarily indicate an immediate shift in strategy. “They’ve always been in the rear, on the third or fourth lines,” he explained. The expert suggested that Kadyrov’s fighters could potentially be sent to the Sumy region, but they might also be redeployed to other areas such as the Kursk region. As a result, making precise forecasts at this stage remains difficult.
Ongoing Developments in the Sumy Region
Earlier, Andrii Demchenko, spokesperson for the State Border Guard Service, reported that the enemy continues to deploy infantry units within the Yunakivka and Khotin communities of the Sumy region. Specifically, Russian forces are attempting to expand their area of incursion.
According to reports, the enemy currently lacks sufficient forces to advance in multiple directions simultaneously during the summer months. Because of this, they have chosen two specific areas for offensive operations. This strategic focus indicates that Russian forces are prioritizing key locations, possibly in an effort to consolidate control or gain tactical advantages.
The situation in the Sumy region remains fluid, with ongoing clashes and shifting dynamics between Ukrainian and Russian forces. As the conflict continues, the ability of Ukrainian forces to push back against Russian advances will likely play a critical role in determining the broader outcome of the war.
