The Collapse of Russia’s 155th Guards Naval Infantry Brigade
A significant military unit within the Russian armed forces, the 155th Guards Naval Infantry Brigade, has reportedly suffered a devastating blow. According to a military blogger, the entire command structure of this elite unit has been wiped out. This brigade has been heavily engaged in combat operations across eastern Ukraine and in the Kursk region, where it has endured intense fighting.

Since the full-scale invasion of Ukraine began in February 2022, the 155th Guards Naval Infantry Brigade has experienced repeated setbacks. It has had to be reconstituted multiple times due to heavy casualties. The US-based Institute for the Study of War reported that the Kremlin has rebuilt the unit at least eight times over the past three years. This suggests a continuous struggle to maintain operational effectiveness despite ongoing losses.
The brigade appears to have faced another major battlefield setback as it continues its deployment in Ukraine. A Russian military blogger expressed frustration, claiming that the entire command was eliminated in a precision strike by HIMARS (High Mobility Artillery Rocket System). In a video shared on social media, he said: “Nobody’s telling us that the entire command of the 155th brigade got f**ing wiped out because four HIMARS hit the target dead-on. Because our electric warfare systems ain’t working. That’s the kind of bullsht we’re dealing with guys.”
The brigade was involved in one of the most brutal battles of the war—the fight for Vuhledar, a fortress town in the southern Donetsk region. During the spring of 2023, the unit suffered massive casualties, with reports indicating that up to 300 marines were lost daily during the fierce fighting. A surviving marine who spoke to the regional news site 7×7 described the situation as dire, stating that only eight men remained in one landing assault company. He expressed his wish to have been taken prisoner instead of returning to the front line, criticizing the treatment of soldiers by their officers.

This tragic loss comes amid other high-profile casualties within the Russian military. A former commander of the 155th Guards Naval Infantry Brigade, Major General Mikhail Gudkov, was killed during “combat work” in the western Kursk region. Gudkov had been appointed deputy head of the Russian Navy by Vladimir Putin in March. His death is one of the most significant losses for Moscow since the start of the invasion.
Gudkov was killed in a missile strike near the town of Korenevo, approximately 30 kilometers from the Ukrainian border. His death highlights the increasing risks faced by Russian military leaders and the growing toll of the conflict. As the war continues, the 155th Guards Naval Infantry Brigade’s struggles reflect the broader challenges facing the Russian military in maintaining its strength and morale on the battlefield.
