Types of Weapons Used
The Russian military deployed 728 Shahed-type drones and decoys, along with seven Iskander cruise missiles and six aeroballistic Kinzhal missiles. These attacks primarily targeted the city of Lutsk in western Ukraine, which is located less than 100 kilometers from the Polish border. The proximity of this attack to Poland raised concerns about the potential spillover of the conflict into neighboring countries.
Response from Air Forces
In response to the attack, the Polish Air Force scrambled fighter jets to safeguard Poland’s airspace. Meanwhile, the Ukrainian Air Forces reported that they successfully shot down 296 Shahed-type drones and jammed 415 others using electronic warfare techniques. Additionally, Ukrainian air defense troops intercepted all seven Iskander cruise missiles.
Despite these efforts, six Kinzhal missiles managed to bypass Ukraine’s air defenses. This vulnerability was attributed to a shortage of US-supplied Patriot missile systems and the necessary interceptor missiles, which are critical for defending against advanced threats.

President Zelenskyy’s Statement
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the attack, stating that it highlights Russia’s continued refusal to engage in peace talks. He emphasized that the attack occurs at a time when numerous efforts have been made to achieve a ceasefire. “This is yet another proof of the need for biting sanctions against oil,” he said, referring to the fuel that has sustained Moscow’s war machine for over three years.
Zelenskyy urged Ukraine’s partners to apply pressure in a way that forces Russia to reconsider its military actions. He reiterated the importance of strengthening Ukraine’s air defense capabilities by supplying “life-saving” Patriot systems and relevant interceptor missiles.
International Support and Supplies
Kyiv has consistently called for increased support from its allies. Recent reports suggest that former US President Donald Trump resumed the supply of aid to Ukraine after a brief suspension earlier in the month. According to media reports, Trump pledged to send 10 Patriot interceptors to Ukraine, a smaller number than previously paused while en route to the country.
Additionally, Trump reportedly suggested that Germany sell one of its Patriot batteries to Ukraine. The costs of such a transfer could potentially be shared between the United States and European countries.
