Rotary Club Revamps Community Health Centre

The Rotary Club of Eko-Atlantic, on Wednesday, handed over a renovated health centre in the Ajao Community of Lagos.

According to a Thursday statement, the intervention was done with the support of the Kewalram Chanai Group to address the challenge of maternal mortality.

The facility comprises a two-storey building with a general sitting area, a consultancy room, a labour room, an admission road, an examination room, a pharmacy, a surgery room, a maternity ward, and a general ward.

New sets of medical tools, including beddings, surgical tools, vaccine incubators, generating sets, and general aesthetic uplift, were also made available for the facility.

Present at the unveiling were the Chairman of the Isolo Local Community Development Area, Adebayo Olasupo; the Medical Health Officer for Ajao Estate, Dr Ann Okowa; Chairman of Ajao Community Development Association, Lekan Ogunyemi, and the Sarki for the Hausa residents and dwellers in the community, Mallam Muhammadu Kolo.

The Rotary Club President, Suresh Nayak, and Group Managing Director for Kewalram Group, Siva Subramanian, were also in attendance.

The District Governor of the Rotary International District 9112, Femi Adenekan, while unveiling the project, said the intervention had become necessary given the death toll from child labour in the country.

“As in this case, we have only fulfilled one out of our seven-point agenda, which includes engaging in projects and programmes that promote public healthcare, peace and conflict resolution, education and literacy, economic and vocational empowerment, family of Rotary and social integration, among others.

“On behalf of the Rotary Club of Eko Atlantic and the partner, Kewalram, I unveil this project for the good use of the people of the community and to the glory of God,” Adenekan said.

On his part, the Rotary Club President, Nayak, said, “We have been doing several projects around the community. But this particular project is unique. This is because I have never felt the way I felt before.

“After we completed the project and when I visited for the unofficial handover, the smiles and happiness I saw on the faces of the people of the community gave me goosebumps. I became so proud of myself as a Rotarian and my club.

“Hence, this is done and delivered now. And we will be moving to another community to replicate a similar intervention next year,” he said.

The Group Managing Director of Kewalram Group, Subramanian, said his company moved to the Isolo community over 60 years ago, hence the place had become a home.

“And what do you do at home? You simply take care of it and your people. So, funding and supporting this project was also a dream come through for us because this is one of the interventions we are proud to be identified with and known for,” he remarked.

On his part, the Chairman of the Isolo LCDA said he would ensure the facility was put to good use.

“As part of plans to fulfil this promise, the bad road leading to this hospital would be tarred before the end of this year.

“We will also ensure that the equipment is maintained and the staff are frequently sent on training to reinforce the needed manpower,” he said.
