Ring doorbell users’ security worries as unknown devices breach accounts

User Reports of Unauthorized Access Spark Concerns

Ring doorbell users have been sharing alarming stories on TikTok, claiming their accounts were hacked and that strangers gained access to their cameras. These posts have raised concerns about the security of the smart home devices. Videos circulating on social media show users asserting that Ring experienced a “massive hack,” leading to widespread fear among customers.

One user shared a screenshot showing multiple unfamiliar logins to her account, including three iPhones as well as Safari and Chrome browsers. She warned others about how to manually remove unrecognized devices from the Ring app to prevent further access. The user expressed frustration, stating that Ring had failed to notify other customers or users of the app about the incident. She mentioned being one of the people affected by the breach and noted that she only discovered it after checking her account.

Despite these claims, Ring has since addressed the issue and reassured its customers that no actual security breach has occurred. The company clarified that the problem was not related to unauthorized access but rather a technical glitch caused by a recent software update.

Confusion Over Login Activity

Users who watched the videos started sharing their own experiences, adding to the confusion. One user mentioned that they and a neighbor tried to post about the issue in the neighborhood section of the app, but their comments disappeared the next day. Another user pointed out that they had three devices—Safari, iPhone, and iPad—but did not own an iPad, raising questions about the accuracy of the login activity shown.

According to tech experts and the company itself, the issue is not a data breach but a result of a software update. The update caused prior login dates to be displayed incorrectly as May 28, 2025, and device names to appear as “Device name not found.” This glitch affected all devices that had ever connected to Ring, meaning even old phones, laptops, tablets, and other devices showed up as new logins.

Ring’s Response and Explanation

On its website, Ring acknowledged the issue and explained that the problem stemmed from a backend update. The company stated: “We are aware of an issue where information is displaying inaccurately in Control Centre. This is the result of a backend update, and we’re working to resolve this. We have no reason to believe this is the result of unauthorized access to customer accounts.”

The company emphasized that there is no evidence of a security breach and assured users that they are actively working to fix the issue. However, the confusion surrounding the login activity has left many users concerned and questioning the reliability of the system.

Steps to Protect Your Account

For users worried about their accounts, Ring has provided guidance on how to manually remove unrecognized devices from the app. This step can help block future access and enhance account security. Users are encouraged to review their login activity regularly and take action if they notice anything unusual.

While the situation appears to be a technical glitch rather than a security breach, the incident highlights the importance of staying vigilant and proactive when it comes to smart home devices. As Ring continues to address the issue, users are advised to monitor their accounts and follow the company’s updates for further clarification.
