Residents Launch Petition Against Covenant Relocation

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — The Covenant School is proceeding with its plans to relocate to a new neighborhood, but residents of the area are opposing the move with equal determination.

Covenant plans to develop along Highway 70 from Brook Hollow Road to Vossland Drive.

Greg Fox, who resides near the planned new location, initiated a petition to express his worries.

He mentioned that neighbors believe they were excluded from the decision-making process and are concerned about the traffic the new school will bring, although they fear it’s already too late to prevent it.

Metro Councilman Thom Druffel, who serves the region, stated that he understands the worries of local residents regarding traffic.

Druffel mentioned that he reviewed the city regulations to identify what property rights are allowed and what authority the community holds in this case, but ultimately discovered that a school can be established on the property with specific limitations.

Fox mentioned that he and his neighbors have formed a connection through their shared frustration.

“We’re becoming organized, and I created this petition to collect names and email addresses so I can stay in touch with everyone and hear their thoughts on what we should do next,” he said to News 2.

A lawyer representing The Covenant School addressed the petition with a statement that read, “The school is enthusiastic about the chance to begin anew in a new location where God’s love will remain present. This is an appealing spot for the school and for existing and prospective families. The school is dedicated to being considerate neighbors and anticipates offering a distinctive, caring, and purposeful educational setting for families in West Nashville and further.”

Druffel mentioned that once the school’s traffic plan receives approval from the Tennessee Department of Transportation, he will organize a community meeting to discuss the plan with local residents and address any inquiries.
