Escalation in the Red Sea: Houthi Attacks Threaten Global Shipping
Tensions in the Red Sea have reached a critical point as Yemen’s Houthi rebels carried out another attack on a commercial vessel. This incident occurred just one day after they sank a different ship, raising concerns about the stability of global trade routes through the region.
The latest assault targeted the Eternity C, a Greek-owned cargo ship flying the Liberian flag. The vessel was attacked by drones equipped with explosives and small boats armed with firearms while it was en route to the Suez Canal. Security personnel aboard the ship returned fire, but the attack caused significant damage. Two crew members were injured, and two others went missing. Among the 24 crew members on board were 21 Filipinos, one Russian national, and three security personnel.

That ship was also struck by drones, missiles, and gunfire, forcing all 22 crew members to abandon the vessel. Fortunately, the United Arab Emirates confirmed that the sailors were rescued and transported to safety.
In response to the growing threat, Israeli jets launched strikes on key Houthi-controlled ports in Yemen, including Hodeida and Ras Isa. Israel accused the rebels of using these locations to transfer Iranian weapons into the region. Additionally, the Galaxy Leader, a ship seized by the Houthis in 2023, was targeted. It is believed to have been used as a radar station to monitor maritime traffic in the area.
