Progress in Reconstruction and Development Following the Al-Haouz Earthquake

Over 46,650 families have successfully completed the construction or rehabilitation of their homes as part of the reconstruction and development program for areas affected by the Al-Haouz earthquake. This achievement marks a significant milestone in the recovery efforts following the disaster.

The financial support allocated for the reconstruction and repair of damaged homes has exceeded 4.2 billion dirhams. Additionally, emergency assistance payments, set at 2,500 dirhams per month, have surpassed 2.4 billion dirhams. These figures highlight the extensive investment made to support affected communities.

A recent meeting of the Interministerial Commission overseeing the earthquake recovery program was chaired by Head of Government Aziz Akhannouch in Rabat. The session focused on reviewing the progress of various initiatives and addressing ongoing challenges.

One notable development is the substantial reduction in the number of tents used for temporary shelter, from 129,000 to just 47. These tents are expected to be fully dismantled by September. The commission also reported that local committees have identified practical solutions for 4,895 homes located in difficult-to-access areas, ensuring that even the most remote communities receive attention.

During the meeting, Akhannouch emphasized the need for the High Atlas Development Agency and all relevant stakeholders to accelerate the implementation of remaining projects with greater speed and efficiency. He called for a coordinated effort to ensure that all initiatives are completed promptly and effectively.

Infrastructure Development

In terms of infrastructure, the upgrading of four sections of National Road RN7 is progressing. Work completion rates for these sections range from 25% to 65%. Construction has begun on 165 kilometers of roads and 29 engineering structures, supported by a budget of 920 million dirhams. These developments aim to improve connectivity and facilitate economic activities in the region.

Education Sector

The education sector is also seeing significant progress. Rehabilitation and reconstruction efforts are underway in multiple school facilities. To date, work has been completed on 269 schools, ensuring that students can return to safe and functional learning environments.

Healthcare Improvements

In the healthcare sector, 70 health centers have already been rehabilitated. An additional 35 centers are expected to be completed by the end of August 2025, with 14 more scheduled for completion by the end of October 2025. These efforts are aimed at restoring essential medical services to affected communities.

Water Sector Upgrades

The water sector has also seen improvements. Damage to 43 hydrological stations has been repaired, and several villages have been connected to the drinking water network. Upgrades to existing infrastructure are underway to ensure a reliable and sustainable water supply.

Tourism Recovery

Tourism, an important economic sector, is also receiving support. A total of 229 accommodation establishments have received the first tranche of aid, amounting to 61.1 million dirhams. The second tranche, totaling 30 million dirhams, has benefited 95 establishments. These measures aim to revive the tourism industry and support local businesses.

Overall, the ongoing efforts reflect a comprehensive approach to recovery, focusing on rebuilding homes, improving infrastructure, and supporting key sectors such as education, healthcare, water, and tourism. These initiatives are crucial for restoring normalcy and fostering long-term development in the affected regions.
