REA collaborates with GEM and partners for sustainable power

The Rural Electrification Authority has entered into an agreement with regional stakeholders in the renewable energy field, focusing on providing the country’s young people with expertise to promote sustainable energy development.

The agreement marks a crucial move in promoting off-grid power solutions for universities and remote areas throughout the nation.

The Rural Electrification Agency operates as a federal government body under the Federal Ministry of Power. It aims to deliver dependable electricity to rural and underserved areas in Nigeria by carrying out off-grid power projects and introducing new initiatives.

As a major move in executing two new programs sanctioned by the Federal Government through the Sustainable University Challenge and the Renewable Energy Internship Program, the agency has entered into an MoU with Green Energy Mission Africa and other local stakeholders in the renewable energy field to work together in advancing these initiatives.

This information was included in a press release shared with our correspondent in Abuja on Monday by Nnenna Edem, the Communications Officer at GEM Africa.

As per the statement, Abubakar Shuaibu, the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of GEM Africa, referred to the partnership with local entities in the nation’s renewable energy industry as essential for achieving an equitable energy future.

He stated, “The signing of this MoU marks a crucial point in our path toward a sustainable and equitable energy future. This agreement goes beyond being a collaboration; it represents a joint dedication to supporting the skills, creativity, and possibilities of young Nigerians.”

By means of the Sustainable University Challenge and the Renewable Energy Internship Program, our goal is to illuminate rural areas, while also inspiring the ambitions of the upcoming leaders in clean energy.

He mentioned that the collaboration demonstrates a “strong alignment” with Nigeria’s Energy Transition Plan and the Sustainable Development Goals, especially those concerning clean energy (SDG 7) and fair employment (SDG 8).

In his statement, Abba Abubakar, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Rural Electrification Agency, conveyed robust institutional backing for the collaboration.

He stated that the MoU formalized their partnership with GEM Africa and other stakeholders, acknowledging that the future of energy access and sustainable development depends on our youth.

We need to equip them with the understanding, abilities, and chances required to address practical energy issues.

“The University for a Sustainable Future Initiative and the Renewable Energy Internship Program will enhance innovation, develop essential skills, and aid our overall goal of providing universal, cost-effective, and sustainable electricity access,” he added.

The statement mentioned that according to the MoU’s conditions, GEM Africa and the REA will collaborate to create and implement initiatives designed to provide young Nigerians with technical training, encourage innovation driven by universities, and speed up the availability of sustainable off-grid electricity in areas that lack sufficient power.

The Clean Energy Research Initiative aims to promote the development of renewable energy solutions and foster partnerships among universities in Nigeria. It involves the creation of a scholarly publication focused on advancements in sustainable energy.

The Sustainable Energy Internship Initiative will provide practical training in fields like solar panel installation, small-scale grid development, energy assessment, and project coordination, emphasizing local participation and the country’s preparedness for a skilled workforce.

It stated in part, ‘The Memorandum of Understanding is valid for an initial term of three years and can be extended by mutual consent.’

As per the statement, the MOU signing event took place in Abuja and was attended by representatives from both the public and private sectors, the academic community, and civil society organizations. The agreement establishes a long-term collaboration aimed at advancing innovation, research, training, and workforce growth within Nigeria’s renewable energy industry.

The collaboration combines GEM Africa’s knowledge in renewable energy education and engaging stakeholders, along with REA’s guidance in expanding rural electricity access and fostering public-private partnerships.

Both sides highlighted their dedication to fostering accountability, evidence-based program development, and fair access to opportunities throughout all six geopolitical regions of Nigeria.
