Raleigh Woman’s Internship Nurtures HBCU Students With Love

A Mission of Love and Leadership

A young woman from Raleigh is embarking on a unique journey that combines faith, community service, and the support of others. Christa Riggins, a recent graduate from Winston-Salem State University, is preparing for a two-year internship with RUF (Reform University Fellowship), an organization that has had a profound impact on her life. This mission is not just about personal growth—it’s about making a difference in the lives of students at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).

Riggins shared that during her time at Winston-Salem State University, she was initially very shy and struggled to make friends. However, RUF provided her with a sense of belonging and introduced her to the love of Christ. “It wasn’t just about hearing the gospel,” she said. “It was about finding a community that supported me and helped me connect with my school.”

She understands the challenges that many HBCU students face, especially first-generation college students who may feel overwhelmed by the demands of higher education. Riggins is now taking on a new role at South Carolina State University, where she will focus on loving and supporting students through various activities.

Her responsibilities include leading Bible studies, offering one-on-one mentorship, attending student events, and even helping with daily needs such as grocery shopping when students don’t have access to a car. “My job is to love on college students and share the gospel with them,” she explained. “I also want to equip them to become leaders and serve their communities.”

Christa’s last name might ring a bell for some, as her family gained national attention in 2006 when they received a brand-new home on the ABC show Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. The Riggins family also had a house renovated by the same team through Building Together Ministries, which is located across the street from their new home. Linda Riggins, Christa’s mother, has been a long-time leader at the ministry.

Now, it’s Christa’s turn to continue the family legacy of service. She is currently raising 100% of her salary and expenses to support her mission. She is reaching out to the community for both financial assistance and spiritual support. A meeting is being held at the former site of Building Together Ministries, now known as Fletcher Academy in Raleigh, where people can learn more about her mission and how they can help.

The event will take place from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on Saturday. For those who cannot attend in person, there are still ways to support Christa’s mission. Her story is one of faith, perseverance, and the power of community. By coming together, people can help ensure that students at HBCUs receive the encouragement and guidance they need to thrive.
