One of the most uncertain aspects, or rather, the main question, about the Las Vegas Raiders in 2025 is their defensive backfield. It’s not that people expect them to be terrible; it’s simply that we aren’t sure whether they’ll perform well or poorly.
The atmosphere isn’t strong in the cornerback group, but it is present in the safety position. However, the depth at safety isn’t very good, or wasn’t very good, to be precise. The cornerback group includes two experienced players expected to play significant roles: Darnay Holmes, who previously played for the New York Giants, and Eric Stokes, who once played for the Green Bay Packers.
Neither of those players has truly been the key player on a team. On this team, Jakorian Bennett is the starting cornerback. His potential is impressive; last season, before he was injured, he led the NFL in pass breakups, accomplishing this with a shoulder that was out of place. However, he’s only entering his third year and hasn’t yet played a full season.
Then there’s the second-year player Decamerion Richardson and rookie Darien Porter. Both show tremendous promise. On the defensive backfield, the starting group is strong with Jeremy Chinn and Isaiah Pola-Mao. However, the backup safety position was previously held by Lonnie Johnson, a veteran and standout on special teams, followed by a few players who have had little to no playing experience.
Therefore, an issue within the secondary required attention. An issue within the secondary was resolved.
Raiders and Pete Carroll acquire Jamal Adams
If it were 2020, you might describe this as one of the most impressive actions any team could take at this stage of the off-season.
Then, Adams was among the top safeties in the league. However, he consistently faced challenges in coverage. Over time, his performance has deteriorated, to be honest. This might be due to defensive schemes, coaches not positioning him effectively, or even injuries. The former Seattle Seahawks safety, under Pete Carroll, was once considered elite.
But it’s still somewhat of a flashy move, as the name carries weight, and he could likely serve as an excellent backup. Who knows, the Raiders might even place him in the box, or allow him to play linebacker.
It’s the day before the camp when this signing took place, but it’s one they truly needed. Although he’s not what he used to be, he’s ideal for their current requirements.
