FRAZIERS BOTTOM, WV (WOWK) — The jingle of an ice cream truck is the familiar sound of summer, and one local family is bringing it back to neighborhoods.

After a long summer day in the heat, kids are searching for ways to cool off. That’s why the Dixons, a family from Fraziers Bottom in Putnam County, created their own solution.
Sugar On Wheels is a treat truck inspired by the nostalgic ice cream truck, fully stocked with crowd favorites of ice cream, candy and soda.
Mom Kelli Dixon said that even though she’s had the vision for a while, everything for the physical truck came together fast.

“We knocked on someone’s door and asked them if they wanted to sell their bus, and they said yes,” she said. “And, here we are.”
The Dixons have pioneered this adventure in their own driveway, fitting maintenance as well as stocking and designing into their busy schedules.
The idea stemmed from Kelli’s own childhood, which she was willing to share with her community.
“When I was little, I always wanted to go to my grandpa’s house in Hurricane because he had an ice cream truck drive by,” she said. “When we moved to a subdivision, there was an ice cream truck here. My girls loved it. I remember even hearing him drive by, and we missed him, so we chased him down in another neighborhood.”
She said plans really set into motion when her family noticed a decrease in ice cream trucks.
After officially launching on Facebook, Sugar On Wheels was greeted with open arms and hungry stomachs. Anecdotes of personal memories filled the comment section, which fueled Kelli’s spirit even more.
“It just blew my mind,” she said. “The memories that people were sharing about when they were kids and they were outside playing and they heard the truck and they just stopped what they were doing and took off running.”
Handing off a cold treat goes a long way.
“That’s what I’m looking forward to the most, is just seeing people smile, people happy and just the joy of an ice cream,” Dixon said.
Now that the freezer is stocked and gas is in the tank, the Dixons are ready to start their inaugural season with Sugar on Wheels, all thanks to a harbored dream.
But, she didn’t achieve it alone. With the help of her husband, two daughters and friends — Sugar on Wheels became more than a blueprint.
It became a dream-come-true, and Kelli said doing it all with her family is the cherry on top.
“I think we all have dreams of something we would love to do, but we just don’t do it,” Dixon said. “I encourage everyone- if you have a dream- follow that dream and do what you love to do.”
Trips to neighborhoods began on Wednesday, June 11. The truck is looking to expand its routes, as well as event booking.
