Putin Accuses Europe of Seizing Grain for the Third World

Russian President Vladimir Putin stated on Thursday that Europe is misappropriating grain delivered to poor nations through the 2022 Black Sea Grain Initiative.

At a Kremlin gathering, Andrey Guriev, leader of the Russian Association of Fertilizer Producers, stated that according to the plan, the grain ‘was intended for southern nations.’

“But in the end, it was sent to Europe,” Putin replied.

Guriev also mentioned that if Europe completely stopped using Russian fertilizers for more than three years, it could lead to lower crop production and a 20-30% rise in fertilizer costs, as seen in the United States.

He mentioned that, consequently, European farmers would need to cut back on planting or seek financial assistance.

Europe imports 17 million tons of fertilizers each year, with 5.5 million tons coming from Russia. Europe currently faces the highest mineral fertilizer prices, and additional rises could result in reduced crop outputs and a heavier financial strain on farmers, he pointed out.

Putin stated that the Black Sea Initiative, introduced in 2022, aimed not only at the export of Ukrainian grain via Black Sea ports but also at restoring the flow of Russian agricultural goods and fertilizers to global markets.

Nevertheless, Western nations breached these agreements, he stated, and noted that the majority of Ukraine’s grain was shipped to Europe, while commitments related to Russian goods were not met. Consequently, Russia chose to exit the agreement in July 2023. (Anadolu)
