WICHITA, Kansas (KWCH) – A woman from Wichita discovered puppies inside a duffel bag in eastern Wichita on Tuesday evening near the intersection of 25th and Minnesota.
A resident of Wichita, Tonya Hill, states that she and another neighbor found a duffel bag near a pathway in an eastern Wichita neighborhood around 7 p.m. Inside, there were four puppies, one of which had already passed away.
“It was terrible because I wasn’t sure if they would survive,” Hill said.
She contacted the police, who transported the three surviving puppies to the Wichita Animal Shelter. Hill states there is no justification for abandoning vulnerable animals when assistance is readily available.
“I simply can’t comprehend how someone could do that and still look at themselves in the mirror. The animal shelter is just a few blocks away; they could have taken them there,” she said.
Captain Derek Purcell from the Wichita Police Department and Animal Services notes that, unfortunately, this is not a one-time occurrence.
People frequently abandon animals. You might have an animal you can’t take care of, or your dog might have puppies and you’re unsure what to do with them,” Purcell stated. “No one should feel compelled to abandon animals in the community. If they arrive here, they are here — that’s all.
He encourages pet owners who are unable to care for an animal to take them to the Wichita Animal Service Center or the Kansas Humane Society instead.
