Playing with the white pieces, Praggnanandhaa demonstrated exceptional skill and strategy to defeat the American grandmaster. This win marked a significant milestone for the young Indian player, who is steadily making a name for himself in the global chess community.

Advancing to the Top Bracket

Praggnanandhaa and fellow Indian grandmaster Arjun Erigaisi have both advanced to the top bracket of the tournament. Together with Carlsen, Praggnanandhaa finished joint-top of his group with 4.5 points out of a possible seven. Erigaisi, on the other hand, ended up in joint third place with four points.

The tournament features 16 participants divided into two groups of eight. In Praggnanandhaa’s group, he tied for first place alongside Uzbekistan’s Nodirbek Abdusattorov, Javokhir Sindarov, and Levon Aronian, who also scored four points. Magnus Carlsen finished fifth in the group, ahead of German player Vincent Keymer, American Wesley So, and the sole female participant, Bibisara Assaubayeva from Kazakhstan.

In the second group, Hikaru Nakamura emerged as the leader with an impressive score of 6/7. His compatriot Hans Niemann followed closely with 4.5 points. Arjun Erigaisi again performed well, tying for third place with four points, alongside Fabiano Caruana.

Other notable performances included Leinier Dominguez Perez, Samuel Sevian, and Ray Robson from the United States, who occupied positions five to seven in the group. Indian player Vidit Gujrathi ended up in the last position.
