Portugal to Return Moroccan Migrants After Rare Algarve Arrival

Portuguese officials report that 38 undocumented migrants arrived on the southern Algarve coast in a small wooden vessel, which they refer to as an uncommon path connecting North Africa to Europe.

The judicial authorities have mandated that the adults must depart the country within 20 days, either by their own choice or via forced removal to Morocco, while seven children without guardians will continue to be protected under international procedures.

As per the police and local authorities, the boat left Morocco and remained at sea for five days under hazardous conditions, resulting in the death of four individuals. Those who survived exhibited symptoms of fatigue and poor health when they arrived.

Search and rescue teams took them to medical facilities for care prior to relocating them to a refugee processing center to start the legal process.

Officials state that the minors will be handled in line with EU humanitarian and legal responsibilities for unaccompanied children.
