FITZGERALD, Ga. (WALB) – A major traffic change is coming to Fitzgerald as construction continues on the city’s first roundabout.
Griffin Grading & Concrete LLC, the contractor in charge of the project at State Route 90, plans to shift traffic on Lower Rebecca Road from the existing lanes to adjacent temporary lanes starting Wednesday, June 18.
This move is necessary to allow construction to proceed safely and efficiently. Drivers will be alerted by message boards, and traffic control devices will be in place throughout the shift.
The roundabout project, valued at approximately $7.8 million, is funded by the Georgia Department of Transportation and includes costs for preliminary engineering, right-of-way acquisition, and construction. Officials expect the project to be completed before the end of the year.
Once finished, the roundabout is anticipated to significantly reduce both the number and severity of crashes at this busy intersection.
