The
Pittsburgh Steelers’
talks with
T.J. Watt
seem to be progressing after he held out of mandatory minicamp. Watt sent a message that he wanted to be paid there, but ESPN’s Peter Schrager still thinks the deal gets done before training camp.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter believes Watt will be there for training camp no matter what, even if he is not extended at that point. Contract talks seem to be progresisng well between Watt and the Steelers, but Schefter does not see Watt landing more than
Myles Garrett
.
“I don’t know that he’s going to get more than Myles Garrett. I think T.J. Watt’s going to get a nice, strong, healthy deal…I can’t imagine T.J. Watt wouldn’t be there for the start of training camp, that Pittsburgh would not get a deal done… He’s seen all the money that’s gone around and he wants to make sure he gets rewarded in the appropriate way,” Schefter said on the Pat McAfee Show.
Head coach Mike Tomlin did not seem worried about Watt’s future with the team. While he was not sure when a deal would be done, he believes it will happen before the season.
“I’m not going to get into speculation there,” Tomlin said. “You guys know what negotiations is about; I’m optimistic we’re going to get things done because we got two sides that want things done. When that’s going to occur, I don’t know.”
Other stars, such as Detroit’s Aidan Hutchinson, Cincinnati’s Trey Hendrickson, and Dallas’ Micah Parsons, are all set to get deals that could shift Watt’s market, too. So, it is in the Steelers’ best interest to get Watt signed sooner rather than later before those numbers bump up more.
