Phu Quoc Named Top Luxury Destination by Travel + Leisure

Phu Quoc has consistently proven itself as a top-tier luxury destination, reinforcing its position on the global travel map. Recently, one of the most respected travel publications, Travel + Leisure, unveiled the Luxury Awards Asia Pacific 2025. This annual recognition highlights exceptional luxury destinations in the region, which have experienced rapid tourism growth. To qualify for nomination, these destinations must meet rigorous standards that include service excellence, resort-entertainment ecosystems, brand identity, and personalized guest experiences.

In the Best Islands category, Phu Quoc stood out as the sole Vietnamese representative, securing the third position among the top ten. Bai Kem, one of the island’s most famous beaches, is often described by visitors as “Paradise on Earth.” Its pristine white sands, gentle waves, and crystal-clear waters make it a favorite among travelers seeking natural beauty and relaxation.

From an emerging star to a global luxury destination

Over the past two years, Phu Quoc has earned multiple international accolades, solidifying its reputation as a premier luxury travel spot. Beyond its breathtaking beaches, such as Bai Kem and Bai Sao, the island offers a rich tapestry of cultural and historical experiences, along with vibrant entertainment options and a wide range of accommodations—from budget-friendly to ultra-luxurious.

The transformation of Phu Quoc into a world-class destination has been driven by the Sun Paradise Land ecosystem, developed by Sun Group in southern Phu Quoc. The area features groundbreaking attractions, including the world’s longest three-cable cable car connecting to Hon Thom Island, the innovative Kiss Bridge, and the Guinness World Record-setting multimedia show “Kiss of the Sea.” Additionally, the island provides immersive experiences through colorful firework shows and night markets that keep guests entertained from dusk until dawn.

Between 2021 and 2023, the number of five-star hotels on the island increased by 15%. Since the opening of JW Marriott Phu Quoc Emerald Bay in 2016, the island now hosts around 45 high-end resorts operated by renowned hospitality brands like Marriott, Hilton, Accor, and Rosewood. This development has transformed Phu Quoc from a relatively unknown island into a sought-after destination for affluent travelers worldwide.

Professor and Dr. Tran Dinh Thien, former Director of the Vietnam Institute of Economics, remarked, “Few places can match Phu Quoc’s consistent, high-caliber awards over the past decade. This confirms the island’s capability and Vietnam’s strategic ambition to swiftly elevate Phu Quoc within global competition.”

Ascending to greater luxury

Winning international awards is just the beginning for Phu Quoc. In the coming years, the island aims to further elevate its status, competing with global tourism icons such as Hawaii or the Maldives. Hong Jung Min, CEO of Hanatour Vietnam, stated, “Once the projects are complete, we may see the emergence of the ‘Hawaii of the East.'”

On July 1, Phu Quoc officially became a special economic zone under An Giang Province—a significant milestone that ensures the island’s continued growth. This status will introduce breakthrough policies, reduce administrative barriers, and streamline project execution, making it faster, more transparent, and cost-effective.

Additionally, Phu Quoc is set to become Vietnam’s third host of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Forum in 2027. The Phu Quoc International Airport and Sun PhuQuoc Airways will be ready to welcome high-level guests for APEC 2027. One of the key APEC projects includes a VND22 trillion (US$840.3 million) expansion of the airport, featuring a dedicated VIP terminal meeting the highest international standards for dignitaries and diplomatic events. Sun PhuQuoc Airways will also provide premium services to international delegations.

The upgraded airport and Sun PhuQuoc Airways will seamlessly integrate with Sun Group’s resort, entertainment, and tourism ecosystem, delivering an experience comparable to top global travel hubs like Singapore.

Hon Thom Island is set to welcome a range of ultra-luxury brands, including The Luxury Collection Hon Thom, Rixos Phu Quoc, and Ritz Carlton Reserve Hon Thom. Ritz Carlton Reserve, Ritz Carlton’s most exclusive brand, operates only seven resorts globally, with Hon Thom joining this elite group. Meanwhile, The Luxury Collection at the Aspira Tower is expected to become the world’s second sail-shaped landmark.

Aspira Tower is scheduled to complete in 2027 on Hon Thom Island. These milestones are cementing Phu Quoc’s role as an international tourism and economic hub, delivering lasting value to travelers and investors.

With Sun Group’s vision and investment, Phu Quoc is steadily realizing its ambition to be among the world’s most desirable destinations to visit, live, and invest in.
