SANTA CRUZ — The Santa Cruz Beach Train curves along Chestnut Street in downtown Santa Cruz as it carries passengers back to Felton after leaving the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk.

During the summer, trains travel the round trip between Roaring Camp and the Boardwalk daily on a route through Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park, down the scenic San Lorenzo River Gorge, across a 1909 steel truss bridge and through an 1875 tunnel. The line, which was originally the Santa Cruz & Felton Railroad, began operation in 1875 and the current Roaring Camp Railroads’ Santa Cruz, Big Trees & Pacific Railway began operating along the route in 1985.

The railroad utilizes two former Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe CF7 locomotives that were rebuilt by the Santa Fe at its Cleburne, Texas, shops for their current purpose.
