Accra, May 25, GNA – Representatives from the Department of Cooperatives have emphasized the role of cooperative societies in fostering employment opportunities, advancing agricultural progress, and tackling problems such as unauthorized mining activities.

“Cooperatives have the potential to boost employment and engage young people,” stated Mr. Abubakar Abdul-Malik, Assistant Registrar at the Department of Cooperatives.

Mr. Abdul-Malik stated that their objective is to reinforce the cooperative sector by interacting with parliamentarians and various stakeholders when addressing the Parliamentary Select Committee on Employment, Labour Relations, and Pensions during a familiarization tour undertaken by several committee members in Accra.

The purpose of the visit was to comprehend the responsibilities and roles of the Department, pinpoint obstacles and regions needing enhancement, and investigate potential avenues for cooperation and assistance between Parliament and the Department of Co-operatives.

Representatives from the department showed particular interest in certain domains such as labor relations and workforce development.

“We anticipate a fruitful and enlightening conversation… Let’s join forces to encourage collaborative growth and strengthen partnership,” stated Mr. Abdul-Malik.

The conversation underscored how cooperatives can stimulate economic expansion and boost employment opportunities.

Although several obstacles were highlighted by government officials, Mr. Apraku Yeboah, who serves as the Acting Registrar for the Department of Co-operatives, stated, “Technology offers co-operatives an opportunity to connect with clients and enhance their offerings.”

The discussed hurdles included insufficient personnel, rundown facilities at both central headquarters as well as regional and district branches, limited capabilities for performing tasks effectively, scarcity of financial resources, and deficient logistical support.

Mr. Joseph Appiah Boateng, who leads the Parliamentary Select Committee on Employment, Labour Relations, and Pensions, has urged for cooperation to achieve shared objectives within the industry.
