Over Half of Americans Admire the French Lifestyle and Work Ethic

More than half of Americans express admiration for the French way of life, drawn to their emphasis on fresh ingredients, cultural appreciation, and a balanced approach to work and personal time. A survey of 2,000 adults revealed that 29 percent of Americans appreciate the French preference for fresh food over processed options, while an equal percentage admire their deep connection to arts and culture. This admiration extends to their work habits, with 60 percent of respondents believing the French have a better work-life balance compared to Americans, who only 10 percent consider themselves to have.

A significant number of Americans also respect how the French value their scheduled work hours, with 22 percent appreciating their commitment to clocking off at the end of the day. Similarly, 22 percent admire the French approach to lunch breaks, which they view as a “sacred time” rather than a quick break. The French love for fine cuisine and their sense of style are also frequently cited as aspects of their lifestyle that resonate with many Americans.

The survey found that 22 percent of those familiar with the French lifestyle would like to incorporate some elements into their own lives. Among the most desirable aspects are enjoying quality food, having time for hobbies and interests, and taking longer lunch breaks. Additionally, 21 percent of respondents have adopted a more romantic attitude, and the same number have tried to be more humble, inspired by the French way of living.

A spokesperson for St Pierre, a bakery brand that commissioned the study, shared insights about the French lifestyle during a surprise lunchtime event in the U.S., encouraging people to “Eat Avec Respect.” They noted that the French lifestyle is often admired globally for its timeless appeal, emphasizing the art of slowing down, prioritizing quality, and embracing a sophisticated yet grounded way of life. From sipping coffee at a sidewalk café to strolling through a local market or spending time with family, the French approach to life offers a rhythm that feels both elegant and meaningful.

Interestingly, 29 percent of Americans believe it is unlikely that the French admire any parts of the American lifestyle. However, 42 percent expressed a desire to move to France permanently. When asked about what they would be most proud to share with other countries, 27 percent chose a meaty cheeseburger, another 27 percent selected fried chicken, 26 percent were proud of barbecue ribs, and 22 percent opted for classic American apple pie.

Despite this pride, one in four respondents admitted they learn about the French lifestyle primarily through social media platforms like Instagram or TikTok, while 19 percent rely on YouTube. To further promote the idea of adopting a more French approach to daily life, St Pierre created a humorous video teaching American workers how to take their lunches more seriously.

The spokesperson emphasized that many Americans admire the French way of balancing work and rest, highlighting a deep respect for boundaries and the understanding that taking proper breaks is essential for well-being and productivity. They added that good food nourishes the soul, making every mealtime an opportunity to “eat avec respect.”
