The English Language exam, which is part of the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WAEC), was scheduled to start on Wednesday (May 28) in the afternoon.
However, in certain regions, students began their writing efforts as late as 10:00 p.m. local time, with some extending their work into the wee hours of May 29th.
Multiple pictures and video clips circulated on the internet depicting pitch-black classrooms lacking power supply, as pupils attempted to finish their exams using only flashlights.
The West African Examinations Council (WAEC), responsible for administering the test, has subsequently offered an apology to students, schools, and parents.
WAEC stated that a combination of logistical issues, security worries, and measures to prevent exam leaks led to the postponements.
“Even with our best attempts, we faced various challenges including logistics issues, security worries, and socio-cultural elements that adversely affected our activities,” part of the statement read.
Since then, numerous Nigerians have criticized this event, stating that the nighttime examinations were unjust and taxing for the students involved. Some individuals have even called for an outright cancelation of these tests.
In the meantime, WAEC stated that they are taking measures to ensure this issue does not recur. This examination is administered to final-year secondary school students in Nigeria as well as other West African nations.
