WEST MONROE, La. (KNOE) – The Ouachita Parish School Board tackled a range of priorities at its meeting Monday: approving its 2024–25 budget, outlining school cafeteria upgrades and taking early steps on future construction plans.
Board members opened with recognitions, including the High School Student of the Year and introductions of new principals and assistant principals. The focus quickly shifted to financial planning, with the board approving the advised budget for the upcoming school year.
Included in the spending plan is $100,000 earmarked for cafeteria improvements. Officials say the funds will support expanded use of fresh and hydroponic produce in school meals across all grade levels. “We’re going parish-wide this year,” director of child nutrition services said, noting the fresh initiative had previously been limited to middle and high schools.
Looking ahead, the board began the search for an architect for the upcoming 2025 East Side Bond project. It also approved the purchase of property at 404 Register Street, near West Monroe High School, which is expected to be converted into parking.
“That is a property located in proximity to West Monroe High School, and it will most likely be turned into a parking lot,” a board member said.
Other agenda items included renewing the district’s insurance policies, reviewing April financial reports and policy updates related to employee healthcare.
“We’re really geared up in June and July,” a board representative said. “It’s a continuous process—planning, professional development and reviewing test data to prepare for the next school year.”
While no action was taken on some items, board members indicated planning is underway for long-term improvements across the parish.
