Orange Weather Alert: Heavy Rain and Lightning Threaten Four Irish Counties

Severe Weather Warnings Issued for Six Counties in Ireland

Met Eireann has issued two weather warnings for six counties across the country due to heavy rain that is affecting several regions. The national meteorological service has issued a Status Orange rain alert for Dublin, Louth, Meath, and Wicklow. This warning highlights the potential for persistent and heavy rainfall, along with the possibility of thunderstorms.

Residents in these areas are advised to remain cautious as the weather conditions could lead to widespread surface flooding, very challenging travel situations, lightning-related damage, and extremely poor visibility. The orange warning will remain in effect until 2pm on Monday, July 21.

In addition to the orange warning, a Status Yellow rain warning has been issued for Kildare and Monaghan. These counties are expected to experience spells of heavy rain, with isolated thunderstorms possible. Potential impacts include localized flooding, reduced visibility, and difficult driving conditions. This yellow warning will also expire at 2pm on the same day.

According to Met Eireann’s nationwide forecast, the rain is expected to ease off later in the day. A spokesperson from the organization stated:

“Wet conditions this morning and early afternoon across Leinster and east Ulster, with heavy rain causing localised flooding and hazardous travel conditions. Other areas will be drier with isolated showers.

“Later in the afternoon, the rain in the east will gradually ease and become patchy. The highest temperatures will range between 15 to 20 degrees, with moderate to occasionally fresh northwest winds.

“Tonight, the weather will largely dry out as any remaining rain in the northeast clears, leaving clear spells and isolated showers for the night. The lowest temperatures are expected to be between 11 to 14 degrees, with light west to northwest winds.”

Tomorrow, Tuesday, July 22, will bring a drier and brighter day, though some rainfall is still expected. Met.ie reported:

“Tomorrow morning will be mostly dry with bright spells and isolated showers. More frequent showers will spread from the west through the morning and early afternoon, accompanied by increasing cloud cover.

“The highest temperatures will range from 15 to 19 degrees, with a light to moderate west to northwest breeze.

“Overnight, the showers will become more isolated, and most areas will experience dry conditions with clear spells. The lowest temperatures are expected to be between 10 to 14 degrees, with a light northwesterly breeze.”

Looking ahead to the rest of the week, Met Eireann anticipates more dry weather. While there may be occasional showers or short periods of rain, the overall accumulation is expected to be minimal. This suggests that the worst of the current weather conditions will soon pass, allowing for more stable and manageable weather patterns in the coming days.
