Onyeka Set to Join Relegated Bochum

Nigeria-eligible

Midfielder Francis Onyeka is close to signing with newly relegated VfL Bochum for a season-long loan from Bundesliga winners Bayer Leverkusen, as reported by Werkself Xtra.

The exceptionally well-regarded 18-year-old attacking midfielder has progressed through the levels at Bayer Leverkusen since joining their youth system back in 2014. Even though he is considered one of the most promising talents to come out of the club’s developmental program recently, Onyeka has found it challenging to secure a place in the team’s talented main squad.

Although he has played one game each in the UEFA Champions League and the DFB-Pokal with Bayer 04 Leverkusen over the last couple of years, his route to consistent appearances in the starting lineup continues to be obstructed by seasoned players such as Florian Wirtz, Amine Adli, and Jonas Hofmann.

Given the constrained prospects and increasing rivalry in the midfield, Leverkusen plans toloan Outonkesto provide him with significant firsthand team experience.

Bochum, set to play in the second division next season after being relegated, seems to be his probable destination.

Onyeka still has two years left on his contract with Die Werkself. To maintain control over his future, the club might choose to extend his agreement prior to approving any temporary transfer. Otherwise, how he performs during the loan period could determine whether Leverkusen brings him back into the team permanently or not.

Onyeka was born in Germany to Nigerian parents, making him eligible to play for either nation internationally. Although he has represented Germany at the U-15, U-16, U-17, and U-18 levels, he hasn’t yet been called up to the senior team, leaving open the possibility of switching his allegiance to Nigeria.

An athlete who naturally favors his left foot, Onyeka primarily functions as an offensive playmaker. He excels in the final third of the field with his exceptional vision, ball control, and inventive skills. It’s worth noting that despite some rumors, he is not related to Nigerian national team member Frank Onyeka.

Given Leverkusen is anticipated to experience significant changes this summer due to Xabi Alonso’s transfer to Real Madrid, along with potential exits of multiple key players, Onyeka’s temporary switch might provide him with regular playing time, thus boosting his growth.
