ONDA Launches Earthworks for New Terminal at Casablanca’s Mohammed V Airport

Major Infrastructure Project Begins at Casablanca’s Mohammed V Airport

The National Airports Authority (ONDA) has officially initiated earthworks for the new terminal at Casablanca’s Mohammed V Airport, marking a significant milestone in one of Morocco’s most ambitious infrastructure projects. This development is set to be completed by 2030 and represents a major step forward in the country’s efforts to modernize its aviation sector.

The project involves a total investment of 15 billion dirhams, with the primary goal of increasing the airport’s capacity to handle an additional 20 million passengers annually. Once completed, the airport will be able to accommodate up to 35 million passengers per year, significantly enhancing its role as a key transportation hub.

This expansion is part of Morocco’s broader «Airports 2030» national strategy, which emphasizes innovation, sustainability, and improved connectivity across the country. The initiative aims to position Morocco as a leader in the global aviation industry while supporting economic growth and tourism.

Key Players and Timeline

Following a public tender process, the earthworks have been awarded to STAM, a leading national firm known for its expertise in large-scale infrastructure projects. The preparatory phase is expected to last eight months, during which time the groundwork for the new terminal will be laid.

Before the start of construction, extensive architectural and technical studies were conducted by an international consortium consisting of Ala Concept, RSHP Architects, and Egis Bâtiments International. These firms are recognized for their work on iconic terminals in cities such as London, Madrid, and Geneva. Their involvement underscores the high standards that the new terminal is expected to meet.

The design of the terminal reflects Morocco’s aspirations to integrate more deeply into global economic and tourism networks. It is envisioned as a next-generation facility that will offer a seamless, digitalized passenger experience, along with top-tier energy performance and enhanced climate resilience.

Enhanced Connectivity and Future Plans

One of the standout features of the new terminal is the inclusion of a high-speed train station, which will connect the airport to Rabat in just 30 minutes and to Marrakech in under an hour. This integration with Morocco’s rail network is expected to further boost the airport’s appeal and convenience for travelers.

To ensure the highest quality of construction, ONDA launched a Call for Expressions of Interest earlier this year to identify the most qualified contractors. The process concluded at the end of May 2025 and attracted 27 Moroccan and international groups with proven expertise in complex airport infrastructure. The competitive bidding for the terminal’s construction began in July, with a contract award expected by the end of the year.

Strategic Importance and Global Ambitions

With the start of earthworks, ONDA is accelerating the implementation of the «Airports 2030» strategy, which is now a central component of Morocco’s national development ambitions. The project not only supports the growth of Royal Air Maroc but also strengthens Casablanca’s position as a vital intercontinental hub connecting Europe, Africa, and the Americas.

As the 2030 World Cup approaches, Casablanca is poised to welcome the world and showcase Morocco’s capabilities on the global stage. The new terminal will play a crucial role in this effort, ushering in a new era of connectivity, economic growth, and international influence for the country.
